Fil-Am Crossover Got Attitude! - 7/2/07
What can I say about the Men’s Open Division Crossover? They play hurt, outnumbered, and tired but with no excuses! They never give up! The best thing about the team, they are still growing and learning. For sure they need more additions, but getting those new guys, they have to learn how to play the Crossover way; team work, role playing, dedications, camaraderie, and heart. That’s all I can say about Crossover, they have the winning attitude!

Fil-Am Basketball of Glendale Heights Hoopsters Win Juvenile Division - 9/14/07
As reported in The Philippine Weekly
-By Sylvia Quines

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Fil-Am NABA Juvenile Division Champions
Front row (from left): Julian Ramirez, Marchael Aluquin, Danny Trinidad, Garret Recto, Brandon Penaranda, Neal Pagdanganan, and Mark Tacderas. Standing: Coach Gino Penaranda, Carlo Lacap, MVP Mike Gonzaga, Best Forward Marc Andres, Best Guard, Jonathan Reyes, and Julian Penaranda.

TORONTO, Canada-The Fil-Am Basketball of Glendale Heights, Illinois had fielded five teams for the traditional Labor Day weekend of the North American Basketball Association (NABA) Tournament hosted this year by Toronto, but only one came through without a loss to snare the Juvenile Division crown: the Juvenile Five who took on all opponents at the University of Toronto, Mississauga campus in Ontario.

Coached by Gino Penaranda, the Juveniles romped over Central Jersey in the opening game Saturday, September 1st with a lopsided score of 52-33; then thumped Staten Island about six hours later with a resounding 45-32 blowout.

Early afternoon the following day, Sunday, September 2nd, they barely defeated the strong home team, Toronto with a 47-45 squeaker.

They would face the same well-coached squad of Toronto for the championship later that evening before a hostile home crowd, but prevailed anyhow with crisp precision plays, a much higher shooting percentage along with tighter defense which had their three mainstays justifying the honors that would be heaped on them during the awards ceremonies at the conclusion of the tournament.

Mike Gonsaga was named "Most Valuable Player"; Marc Andres as "Best Forward" and Jonathan Reyes as "Best Guard" in the Juvenile Division.

Coach Pernaranda was quick to point out that teamwork played a vital role in his team's quest for the championship. Also contributing significantly to the team's success was his son, Julian Penaranda, a first stringer who has just been offered a four-year scholarship to play varsity basketball at the Trinity International University in suburban Deerfield.

The Fil-Am Glendale Heights fielded teams in the Bantam Division, Juvenile Division, and two Open Divisions. Uniforms for the Juvenile Division were donated by Quality Meat Market of Carol Stream.

A total of 17 cities (out of 22 member-cities) in the U.S. and Canada participated in the Sept. 1-2, 2007 NABA Basketball tourney.

From the U.S.; Chicago, Glendale Heights, Detroit, Staten Island, Jersey North, Jersey Shore, Jersey Central, Boston, Ohio, Virginia and Florida.

The North American Basketball Association (NABA) is a non-profit organization which coordinates an annual basketball tournament for athletes of Filipino ancestry. This organization was founded in 1986. It is supported by volunteers from various cities throughout the northeast regions of America (U.S. and Canada).

Its annual tournament is held during the Labor Day Weekend, in either the U.S. or Canada. According to the host of the 2005 Tournament (SIPAG Basketball in New York), the NABA tournament has been described as Olympics of BAsketball because of its large participation and attendance.

This year's 2007 tournament was held in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and hosted by NABA Toronto in cooperation with Dolce, CKaTT Basketball group and the Mississauga Tourism. A total of 17 cities from the United States and Canada fielded 84 teams and 1,260 players in nine age divisions who played a total of 150 games in the 2-days tournament. The next NABA tournament will be held in Detroit during the Labor Day weekend of 2008.

Mississauga, Ontario is a growing suburban city in the Greater Toronto area with a population of 700,000 roughly 4 percent of which are of Filipino ancestry. It is Canada's sixth largest city located in the shores of Lake Ontario. Check out the Mississauga Tourism.ca website for more information about this city.
